About Philippe
Philippe Weiss grew up in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he spent his early years collecting obscure global vinyl—hip-hop, funk and jazz of an anti-Europop variety—and making the rounds of the DJ circuit. His clear gift for electronics and audio engineering forced him out of Switzerland at age 20 with sky-high ambitions of London and Paris, where upon arrival he helped define the sound of French and European dance music.
“But you can come from anywhere and make it,” he says emphatically. “I’ve always believed that, and I still do.”
Philippe started in Paris’ renown “Studio Davout” working with the Red Hot Chili Peppers ans Reggae legends Sly and Robbie to name a few…
He’s worked with everyone from Cee-Lo Green and the Beastie Boys to Martin Solveig and has just finished a stint working on Madonna’s latest album. He was heavily involved in the debut of multi-platinum European artist Selah Sue and is currently busy with K’Naan, The Knocks and Dragonette.
You won’t hear any of this from Philippe, an elusive and private technician whose fervor for music is as obsessive as it is “pure”. Disliking fame for fame’s sake, he has always done business his own way. He only takes on projects that interest him, and he throws himself so deep into each project that he often takes himself to the point of exhaustion.
“I’m not interested in pumping out songs like a factory,” he says. “I’m interested in the music itself. And when I’m with you, I’m really with you.”
Throughout his unusual and noteworthy career, Philippe has been guided by his uncanny instinct—the same intuitive touch that allowed him to mix his first single at age 23, as an untrained assistant in Paris, and then watch it sell 100,000 copies. (Assasin and the NYC mc’s Supernatural)
“I think I understand how a song should sound through the radio,” he says. “I can make a song sort of speak to everybody, the 7-year-old, the club kid, the 77-year-old. I know how to be the interface between what an artist has in his head and the final product he’ll get behind and perform, proudly, for years.”
